SAM
Sam Welch is an artist who transforms raw emotion into music, bridging the solitary struggles of depression and emotional dysregulation with the open honesty of spiritual transcendence. A trained vocalist and pianist, Sam has spent over two decades crafting songs that explore life, death, and the complexities of the human experience—all through the lens of alternative pop.
With a background in Economics and Philosophy from UMass Boston and Columbia University, Sam’s intellectual curiosity is woven into his music. While at Columbia, he toured the country with the Columbia Kingsmen, sharing his love of music through a cappella performances. Since then, he has created multiple bodies of work, including The Republic, a project that delves into the philosophical depths of existence and mortality.
Beyond music, Sam is a dedicated advocate for individuals with psychiatric disabilities, using his art to foster understanding and connection. His own journey—including a battle with depression and treatment at McLean Hospital—has deeply influenced his songwriting, resonating with listeners since 2000. His experiences serving in the Navy, traveling through Europe, and embracing his Unitarian faith further shape his unique perspective, making his music both deeply personal and universally relatable.
Sam currently resides in Lunenburg, MA, where he continues to write, record, and find inspiration alongside his two beloved cats, Ophelia and Lucy.
